Those of us in the reference data arena have been paying close attention to the progress being made in bringing the LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) to life. There remain significant hurdles to clear before the LEI is actually created and adopted by the initial set of users and entities – swap dealers and major swap participants that are regulated by the CFTC. As a number of people have asked me recently to describe the LEI and where the process stands, I thought I would put together the key documents that outline how we got to where we are, what the next few milestones are, and some thoughtful comments and criticisms.
