2007 will see the continuation of a number of trends that emerged at various speeds in 2006:
RSS adoption will continue but at a faster pace. At this time last year a small handful of Alacra client firms had RSS strategies, this year many more are looking into how RSS will impact research and information distribution.
More vertical search. More horizontal search. More persistent search. More search of every kind. Google is so big and its margins are so large that plenty of money will be thrown at competing and/or leveraging the platform.
Social software is more widely recognized and utlized as Knowledge Management 2.0.
More valuable and useful stuff will be available via mobile devices.
Somewhat different from last year:
Big changes in the investment research landscape. More on this in a future post.
More pricing pressure on content. There's too many providers of similar databases; there will be some consolidation.
Lots of M&A both in the information/internet space and outside of it. Tops on my list of firms having a good chance of being acquired: NewsGator, FeedBurner, NetVibes, Socialtext.
Other forecasts I like: Read/Write Web, Bob Lefsetz, Information Architects
