For a great background article on Joshua Schachter, founder of del.icio.us, see James Surowiecki's article in the MIT Technology Review. Replying to how to expand the del.icio.us audience from the current 300,000 registered users, Schachter says, "You have to solve a problem people actually have. But it's not always a problem that they know they have, so that's tricky." Which I think sums up the issue with many Web 2.0 applications. Either people don't know they have a problem, or they understand they have a problem but the applications available (assume they know the application exists) do not solve the problem directly or simply enough.
